Full Title: Integrating ALN into an Independent Study Distance Education Program: NVCC Case Studies
Synopsis: Co-authored with Merrily Stover. This paper describes eight ALN (= Asynchronous Learning Networks) courses (chemistry, engineering, mathematics, and information technology) developed by Northern Virginia Community College's Extended Learning Institute. This case study offered these conclusions:
- ALN courses were a viable and successful learning experience for community college students.
- ALN worked effectively for independent study distance education programs designed to maximize learner flexibility and convenience.
- ALN courses which integrate multiple media can be delivered effectively.
- Faculty selection, development, and support were critical factors in assuring quality ALN courses.
- A wide variety of effective practices can result in successful ALN courses.
- The learning effectiveness of ALN courses will improve as practice evolves.
